Sony BRAVIA KDL-52XBR9 HDTV Review

Deciding on which 50-inch display to get is much tougher than getting smaller TVs because there may be two or three variations of the same size having different feature sets and price tags attached to them.

However, HDTVs that are sized above 50 inches are generally expensive to begin with and it may be the wisest decision to go out and get the best TV possible.

It doesn’t have to be the biggest as 50 inches should be enough to grace any large living room.

The Sony BRAVIA KDL-52XBR9 is one good example of a quality product that strives to be everything it can for its size.

Technical Features

Unlike older 52-inch models, the new XBR9 model manages to get the screen real estate right by making the speakers hidden and making the screen thinner so that the screen looks bigger than the rest of the 52-inch units.

Of course the Full HD 1080p resolution is present in this massive display, but the “Scene Select” feature gives the display some extra mileage by offering various video and audio presets that match a number of scenes including gaming, sports, cinema, and several others.

The best thing all these extras is that it still exceeds the Energy Star 3.0 requirements so using this model can save a lot on future electric bills.

Technologies

Like other high-end models, the KDL-52XBR9 has the BRAVIA Engine 3 which separates itself from the other TV displays in terms of color quality, sharpness, and detail.

It also makes full use of the Motionflow technology by smoothening the flow at 240Hz.

A unique feature to the XBR9 is the Live Color Creation technology which works by using a Wide Color Gamut – Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp to make the colors more vivid than usual.

Extra Features

The Sony KDL-52XBR9 doubles as a multimedia powerhouse that is packed with Internet features including access to popular sites and services such as Amazon Video On Demand and YouTube.

Several other services can be accessed as well and can be utilized at anytime from the remote.

The Internet connectivity can also be used to power the widgets that can be placed anywhere on the screen to display informative online content including weather, news, and stock information updates.

When not connected to the Internet, the KDL-52XBR9 can still connect to other devices as long as they are DLNA-approved granting users the ability to share files and other content amongst PCs and other devices in the network.

A USB port is also available to read the contents of external drives and media devices.

Reception

The KDL-52XBR9 received a lot of praise for the outstanding image quality and decent variety of Internet features. Many liked the design improvements and easy setup process.

Bottom Line

The XBR series continue to grow strong with the KDL-52XBR9. It is a bit more expensive than the other 52″ models, but the extra features and breakthrough technologies make this a clear leader in the 52″ HDTV displays.
